She soon discovers the excitement and dangers of travelling from the east to the west coast of America.
As the journey goes on this little girl learns what courage and determination you need to become a pioneer.

The Little Pioneer was selected by Costco as one of their picks of Bologna Book Fair.

This book has amazing illustrations and I would suggest it is for ages 7-11.

Dinosaurs and Dinner Ladies by John Dougherty

What’s the real reason the dinosaurs died out? Can anyone rescue Class 3 from the wild dinner ladies? And what will happen when Class 2M meet a lion?

A book of brilliantly funny poems from John Dougherty, a well known fiction author, there are riddles, puzzles and haiku. There are illustrations from Tom Morgan Jones which give a great feel to the poems and even the most reluctant of readers will be smiling!

Published by the new children’s imprint of Otter-Barry, who has a commitment to four poetry collections a year and this is a terrific start.

Read all the poems in this book and my thoughts are that if they all have a final verse as Dinosaurs and Dinner Ladies, it’s going to make for some real fun reading!

But survival of the fittest means
That dinner-ladies
Still exist.’

A great read for all ages and especially for 7- 10 years.

Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature

A real discovery book, excellent in all aspects at creating a love of nature, finding out and just getting outside with a purpose.

Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature was published by Frances Lincoln in March 2016 and is a great book to buy now for the summer holidays and for enjoying time together in the Big Outside.

The authors are: Maria Ana Peixe Dias and Inês Teixeira do Rosário and illustrated by Bernardo P. Carvalho, all from Portugal.

This book won the Bologna Regazzi award, which aims to arouse curiosity about fauna, flora and to get to know the outside world.

Every page turned has an intriguing illustration or fascinating information in the text. From how to build a swing and reach the clouds, with facts about making a swing in a tree to the different types and styles of beaks on birds! It is literally packed with information for children ages, 8-12 and for adults who have maybe forgotten that stuff or never knew!

Even if we live in the city, nature is still all around us: clouds and stars, trees and flowers, rocks and beaches, birds, reptiles or mammals.
What are we waiting for?

I will definitely be using this book through the summer and can’t wait for a child or two to share our time in the Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature.

The Big Book of Mr Badger by Leigh Hobbs

Mr Badger is always on hand to cope with many surprises at the Boubles Grand Hotel.

My favourite story is Mr Badger and the Missing Ape. Algernon is usually kept stuffed in a glass case in the lobby. But Lady Celia’s granddaughter is not happy with this gorilla and wants it sent away. As she usually gets just whatever she wants the alarming disappearance one morning gives Mr Badger quite a task, but solve it, he does.

There are four stories in the one book, which is full of brilliant sketches and the characters really come to life.

Mr Badger is written by Leigh Hobbs, who has an amazing talent for writing and for illustrating too. He has a great website for a whole range of his books.

This year he has been appointed as the Australian Children’s Laureate and there are whole host of great activities for children all over the world as well as Australia.

Mr Badger is published by Allen and Unwin, Australia and can be purchased here in the UK.

A great book and we recommend for children 7+, especially for those who still get a lot from the images through each chapter.

Discover Series – Ancient Egyptians,The Roman Empire

The Ancient Egyptians is the first book in the new Discover Series, published by Frances Lincoln and newly released on 7th April.

The style and illustrations make this a very good read into life at this time. It is a perfect companion for curriculum use and research in the classroom as well as in the home. It’s great as inspiration for wall displays in schools across the UK. It’s a book that is not only easy to read in the graphic style but will allow the information to stay with you.

The information in the book includes everything from pharaohs and mummies to daily life and the role of the Nile, via hieroglyphs and archaeology. A map and a timeline complete this fabulous book by graphic novelist Isabel Greenberg and her sister Imogen Greenberg.

There is also a special exhibition at The British Museum on Ancient Egypt’s Sunken Cities which open on 19th May.

Discover the Roman Empire is also newly published on 7th April and written and illustrated by Isabel and Imogen Greenberg.

It covers a length of time in the Roman Empire starting with the rise and ending with the fall of the empire. There are great sections on Roman beliefs, architecture, inventions and daily life. It is a good book for the curriculum in primary schools and also to read at home.

We recommend for ages 7-10 years and as a book to have at home for all the family.

The Wonder Garden and One Thousand Things from Wide Eyed Editions

Sometimes you come across a book that is just wonderful in every way and The Wonder Garden is one of those! Written by Jenny Broom and illustrated by Kristjana S Williams it is one of the brilliant books from Wide Eyed Editions.

It is an exploration of five of the world’s Wildest Habitats’ the Amazon, the Himalayas, the Chihuahuan Desert, the Black Forest and the Great Barrier Reef.

The illustrations are stunning and the information is well crafted by Jenny into immediately inspiring texts.

We recommend for ages 7 -11 years.

One Thousand Things by Anna Kovecses is a beautiful and very tactile book in hard back. It has a range of words and objects and is an introduction to vocabulary,with wonderful illustrations and a Little Mouse who helps you through the book.

An excellent book for schools and at home.

We recommend for ages 4 – 6 years.

Super Skills Series

We were really impressed with this series from QED-publishing and the books How to Code and How to Cook in 10 Easy Lessons are just brill!!

They are very attractively illustrated and the hard covers and spiral binding make them very practical and long lasting.

How to Code by Sean McManus gives plans that in 10 lessons, helps to understand coding, use Scratch to start programming, manipulate graphics, fix bugs and just about everything you need to know about coding to get started.

Coding is not one of my strengths and to be honest I haven’t even tried,we have a team thought that ‘even I’ may now be able to code!

Sean has a brilliant website included in the book index, along with other really useful stuff.

How to Cook in 10 Easy Lessons by Wendy Sweetser gives a whole range of skills for cooking in 10 lessons. From peeling and grating to making sweet and savoury sauces, each section has 4 recipes that I immediately wanted to try; carrot and pecan muffins, chicken satay or vegetable fried rice.

A great series, 2 spectacularly good books. We recommend for children from 8 years and onwards in schools and in the homes.

Would make some excellent presents in Father Christmas’s sack!

Tutankhamun’s Tomb

An amazing visual adventure through the tomb of Egypt’s most famous Pharaoh, Tutankhamun. This hard back book is full of inviting flaps and pop ups as you journey through the Kingdom of the Nile and the Valley of the Kings.

The journey with the archaeologist, Howard Carter in 1922 takes place as he discovers the steps leading down into the tomb, which had not been walked on for over 3000 years, and as he glimpsed the treasures that lay in the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Written by Jen Green and Julie Renee Anderson and published by QED, this book is a real gem of a book for design, information and readability.

Each page is packed with facts in intriguing layout of the text, there are lots of opportunities for learning and adventure. The book would be an invaluable tool for KS2 work on the Egyptians or as a book at home or in the library for an avid explorer.

My favourite page was about Sailing across the Heavens, and a pop up model of a boat that was in the tomb for Tutankhamun to use to sail into the heavens. Sailing was important for the Egyptians and they believed that even the gods sailed in boats.

Packed from start to finish the information in the book will give those who read it a real interest and understanding about Tutankhamun and the Ancient Egyptians.

We recommend the book for 8 years to adult and beyond!

Cezanne and the Apple Boy

This is a story of a father and son and their relationship, and a story about a genius with a new style of painting, Cezanne and the Apple Boy.

It is the seventh book in Laurence Anholt acclaimed Anholt’s Artist Series and is published by Frances Lincoln.

The illustrations are really engaging, romantic and expressive and as Paul the son finds Paul, his father, they live off apples as he paints scenes in the mountains.

Eventually the work of Cezanne became recognised as a new style and as the work of a genius even though he was never a person to live within the normal confines of society. He preferred the mountains to the towns.

His son became a picture dealer and sold his father’s paintings all over the world.

A truly remarkable story about Cezanne with information about his life as a painter and a story that will stay in your thoughts.

A great book for anyone and for schools and libraries. We recommend it for children ages 7 – 11 years.
